Advocacy: Go VOTE TODAY in the Runoff Election!

July 24, 2018

PeachVoter

Today is the last day to VOTE for the primary runoff election. You may still vote if you missed voting in the May Primary Election.  However, if you did vote in May, you have to vote in the same party primary in which you voted in.  If you have questions or problems, please call us at 1-888-54GALEO (1-888-544-2536) and leave a detailed message with your question or concern.

As part of our ongoing efforts to train Latinx community members for engagement, we are having our 2nd Annual Latino Leaders Summit in August to train and develop leadership skills of community members to better be able to take on the challenges we are facing as a community and to come up with proactive strategies and tactics on where we need to go together.  It is important to march and to rally, but we must also do the work of creating a more fair, more just and more representative democracy.  So, we do hope you will see the info below and register for the 2nd Annual Latino Leaders Summit to develop your skills as a leader and to do more engagement in our communities.
There is still a lot going on and you need to stay engaged.  Please stay up to date with us on facebook.com/GALEO.org for the latest actions and information. We could also use a good rating from you.  We’ve been targeted by fake accounts and we need to continue our work in the community.
Please join our advocacy efforts by joining our texting campaign.  Please stay engaged and respond to important actions by texting the word IMMIGRATION to the short code number 864-237.  This will add you to our texting program to ensure we speak up at needed times.
Please consider the GALEO Latino Community Development Fund as you prioritize your annual donations and donations for the new year of charitable giving.  Please follow the link here:  https://glcdf.ejoinme.org/Donations

Georgia Redistricting Coalition Petition.  Please sign & share!
Fair and equal representation will not take place under the current process. The Georgia Constitution grants the General Assembly the authority to draw legislative and congressional maps subject to a veto by the Governor. In that process, as well as in mid-decade attempts to “tweak” legislative boundaries, we have witnessed racial and political gerrymandering utilized by political parties to consolidate power at the expense of competitive elections and a healthy democracy. Both parties have been responsible for redistricting to protect incumbents and to keep their majorities. Both parties have created legislative boundaries without following any guidelines other than their own self-interest and as part of backroom deals.
With this historic Gubernatorial race, we the voters have an opportunity to demand that the next governor pledge to lead a process for a constitutional amendment that codifies the creation of an independent commission with enforceable guidelines, working in a transparent and non-partisan way to create new Redistricting maps for Georgia in 2021. If the Georgia General Assembly refuses to pass new legislation and/or a constitutional amendment then the new Governor should pledge to veto any new redistricting maps in 2021.
Tell Gwinnett County Commissioners to let voters decide on MARTA in 2018!

Although legislation was passed this year to create the ATL and give more Metro Atlanta counties options for transit service, joining MARTA is still the best option for Gwinnett County.

Advantages of Gwinnett joining MARTA in 2018 under Section 24 of the MARTA Act include:
  • Increases funding for transit tenfold without waiting until 2020 or later.
  • Gwinnett County would levy a 1% sales tax, which would generate approximately 10x the current Gwinnett County Transit budget, for a total of $158m a year to fund additional routes, increased service and new modes, based on the Connect Gwinnett Plan.
  • Transit workers and contractors would have a better chance of being hired from the local community into good, Union jobs.
  • Heavy rail expansion remains an option; MARTA is the only entity that can provide heavy rail service under the ATL legislation.
  • Gwinnett County secures representation on the MARTA Board of Directors.
