Basta! Enough with the School Closures.
Stand With Puerto Rico Teachers And Parents

There’s a growing school crisis in Puerto Rico, and the media, like the Trump administration, is not paying enough attention.

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello and his education secretary are using Hurricane Maria and the island’s bankruptcy case as excuses to close down 283 more public schools. This is on top of the 167 schools they already closed late last year. This will hurt more than 60,000 students and 6,000 educators.

The latest round of school closures has been denounced all over the island. Mayors from across Puerto Rico are up in arms, and they’re demanding the governor stop closing schools.

We need to show the people of Puerto Rico that there’s national support for these protests-like there has been for other recent teacher protests on the mainland.

Add your name to the list of people supporting Puerto Rican teachers, parents and students, and we’ll display your name during the mobilization next week in San Juan.

Action Alert from NALEO!

Help us Save The Census! #Make2020Count

On March 26, the Secretary of Commerce decided to include an untested and unnecessary citizenship question on the 2020 Census form for the stated purpose of enforcing the Voting Rights Act.  However, decennial data are not needed to enforce civil and voting rights law.  The addition of any question at this moment in time would have catastrophic consequences for Latinos and all Americans, sabotaging the fundamental Constitutional mandate that the Census obtain a complete count of all the nation’s residents.

THE FIGHT HAS JUST BEGUN – JOIN US AND TAKE ACTION!

As a Latino elected official or community representative, your leadership on this issue is vital.  Please join in our advocacy campaign against the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 Census.

Call YOUR Members of Congress to OPPOSE the Census 2020 Citizenship Question!

There is still time to weigh in with Members of Congress.  Your Representative and your Senators can urge the Congressional committees with oversight over the Census to reject the citizenship question and hold hearings on the issue. You can call your Representative and Senators to OPPOSE the addition of the citizenship question.  You can find your Representative’s contact information here, and your Senator’s contact information here.

Amplify YOUR Voice opposing the Citizenship Question with the NALEO call to actions below & sample tweets!

It is vital for this Administration and Congress, and your constituents and community, to hear from Latino elected and civic leaders.  Use the sample social media language below to amplify your message on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram using #Make2020Count:

@SecretaryRoss’ decision to include a citizenship question to #Census2020 threatens a full and accurate count of the Latino community and the nation. @NALEO and partners will work to overturn decision so that everyone is counted. www.naleo.org/actionalert_march2018 #Make2020Count

A citizenship question on the #Census2020 is unnecessary, untimely and costly. We will not stand for yet another assault on Latinos, immigrants and Census 2020. I join @NALEO in the fight against a citizenship question to #Make2020Count. www.naleo.org/actionalert_march2018

Adding the citizenship question would sabotage the Constitutional mandate for a complete count of the nation and would have catastrophic consequences for Latinos and all Americans. Join me and @NALEO in challenging this decision. www.naleo.org/actionalert_march2018 #Make2020Count

Opposition to the addition of the citizenship question in Census 2020 has been swift, widespread and bipartisan. @NALEO is leading the fight against the addition of the citizenship question. Join us and #Make2020Count www.naleo.org/actionalert_march2018
