Your CALLS made the difference! Collectively, we killed SB452!
On the last day of the Georgia General Assembly, through collective community action with many organizations, hundreds of phone calls and hundreds of conversations with legislators, we collectively killed SB452! The anti-immigrant bill that would have harmed public safety all over the state and would further make Georgia un-welcoming by creating a police state for everyone to prove legal status with every interaction with law enforcement, even for minor crimes. With your calls and engagement, we killed the legislation! THANK YOU!
There is still a lot going on and you need to stay engaged. Please stay up to date with us on facebook.com/GALEO.org for the latest actions and information.
Please join our advocacy efforts by joining our texting campaign. The image to the right is our latest way to engage with our supporters in a timely manner and make our efforts more effective. Please stay engaged and respond to important actions by texting the word IMMIGRATION to the short code number 864-237. This will add you to our texting program to ensure we speak up at needed times.
Lastly, please consider the GALEO Latino Community Development Fund as you prioritize your annual donations and donations for the new year of charitable giving. Please follow the link here: https://galeo.ejoinme.org/MyPages/DonationPage/tabid/127559/Default.aspx
Thank you for your support!
With your help, SB452 was killed!
|GALEO & partner organizations defeated SB 452 & every other anti-immigrant bill this legislative session!
|Thank you! Together, we did it! Last Thursday was Sine Die, the last the day of the Georgia Legislative Session. Our collective teams across many organizations spent hours working to make sure SB 452 did not get called up for a vote before midnight – and we were successful! SB 452 and every other piece of anti-immigrant bill was defeated this year!
This year, we fought and beat the following bills with the support of our staff, volunteers, and coalition partners:
- We strongly opposed SB 452, a bill that aims to label Georgia as the Deportation State
- We opposed the labeling of non-citizens on driver’s licenses and ID cards (HB 324 & SB 161)
- We opposed attempts to differentiate drivers licenses for non-citizens with deferred status (HB 484 & SB 417)
- We opposed the English as the Official Language Resolution (SR 587 & SR 613) #AdiosAmazon
- We opposed the Remittances Bill (HB 66), which imposes a fee, or tax, on money transmission transactions for individuals
- We opposed measures to cut early voting opportunities (SB 363)
We could not have done it without you!
Thank you for all of your phone calls, emails, and signing our letters to the Governor and Speaker of the House. We did this together, and will continue to protect, and advance together.

|Action Alert from NALEO!
Help us Save The Census! #Make2020Count
|On March 26, the Secretary of Commerce decided to include an untested and unnecessary citizenship question on the 2020 Census form for the stated purpose of enforcing the Voting Rights Act. However, decennial data are not needed to enforce civil and voting rights law. The addition of any question at this moment in time would have catastrophic consequences for Latinos and all Americans, sabotaging the fundamental Constitutional mandate that the Census obtain a complete count of all the nation’s residents.
THE FIGHT HAS JUST BEGUN – JOIN US AND TAKE ACTION!
As a Latino elected official or community representative, your leadership on this issue is vital. Please join in our advocacy campaign against the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 Census.
Call YOUR Members of Congress to OPPOSE the Census 2020 Citizenship Question!
|There is still time to weigh in with Members of Congress. Your Representative and your Senators can urge the Congressional committees with oversight over the Census to reject the citizenship question and hold hearings on the issue. You can call your Representative and Senators to OPPOSE the addition of the citizenship question. You can find your Representative’s contact information here, and your Senator’s contact information here.
Amplify YOUR Voice opposing the Citizenship Question with the NALEO call to actions below & sample tweets!
|It is vital for this Administration and Congress, and your constituents and community, to hear from Latino elected and civic leaders. Use the sample social media language below to amplify your message on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram using #Make2020Count:
@SecretaryRoss’ decision to include a citizenship question to #Census2020 threatens a full and accurate count of the Latino community and the nation. @NALEO and partners will work to overturn decision so that everyone is counted. www.naleo.org/actionalert_march2018 #Make2020Count
A citizenship question on the #Census2020 is unnecessary, untimely and costly. We will not stand for yet another assault on Latinos, immigrants and Census 2020. I join @NALEO in the fight against a citizenship question to #Make2020Count. www.naleo.org/actionalert_march2018
Adding the citizenship question would sabotage the Constitutional mandate for a complete count of the nation and would have catastrophic consequences for Latinos and all Americans. Join me and @NALEO in challenging this decision. www.naleo.org/actionalert_march2018 #Make2020Count
Opposition to the addition of the citizenship question in Census 2020 has been swift, widespread and bipartisan. @NALEO is leading the fight against the addition of the citizenship question. Join us and #Make2020Count www.naleo.org/actionalert_march2018
