Fall 2007 Interns

Alexis Gassenhuber

Alexis Gassenhuber graduated in May 2007 with a B.A. in Spanish and Political Science and is continuing Year Five Post-Baccalaureate Studies at Agnes Scott College. At her school, Alexis coordinated an annual "Fair Trade Valentines Day" and contributed to the Living Wage Campaign. She also had the opportunity to study and research in Amman, Jordan in 2006 and to teach arts and English as a volunteer in Paraguay. This past summer she interned with a political campaign and learned about grants. Alexis is enthusiastic about community organizing and policy work at GALEO. She hopes to find ways to foster sincere dialogue about immigration. ˇSí se puede!

Emily Smith

Emily Smith is a second-year graduate student at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA, pursuing a masters degree in theological studies. She will graduate in December and looks forward to spending her last semester in Atlanta working with GALEO. Originally from Pauline, SC, Emily received a B.A. in English and in Spanish from Davidson College, NC, in May 2006. She spent a semester abroad studying in Alcala de Henares, Spain, in 2004 and traveled to Nicaragua in 2006 with a group of Davidson students. Emily will spend the majority of her time at GALEO developing a strategy on how to engage further the faith community in awareness of immigration issues and GALEO's efforts. After graduating in December, she hopes to find a job working in the non-profit sector in SC, and she ultimately hopes to attend law school with a goal of eventually practicing non-profit law and working with the Latino community.
