Los Comités AAPI y Latino del Censo de Georgia organizan una rueda de prensa conjunta tras la decisión del Tribunal Supremo sobre la pregunta de la ciudadanía

MEDIA ADVISORY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 13, 2019

Norcross, Georgia – The Supreme Court of the United States, will make their decision in regards to the controversial addition of a Citizenship Question in the 2020 Census. That decision will likely be released on June 17th or June 24th. Center for Pan Asian Community Services (CPACS), Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta (co-chairs, GA AAPI CCC),  Latino Community Fund, and GALEO (co-chairs GA Latino CCC) will hold a press conference on the day the decision is released to provide an explanation of the supreme court decision and next steps for Georgia’s AAPI and Latino communities.

Our organizations have joined legal action and actively advocated against the inclusion of the question for a year as it is an attempt to effectively erase the voices and power of immigrants and communities of color. We are hopeful that the U.S. Supreme Court will uphold the findings of three different lower court judges and protect the basis of our representative democracy. Regardless of the decision, we will not be deterred from having our communities counted.” said in a joint statement from the signing organizations. Georgia has one of the highest AAPI and Latino population growth in this nation. A complete count in the 2020 Census will ensure critical funding and representation for our families over the next decade. Census data are crucial to allocating seats in Congress, drawing accurate election districts and ensuring equitable distribution of federal funds for a wide range of vital social service programs. We are collectively committed to ensuring our growing communities are accurately counted and secure the dollars, political representation, and power they deserve.
