2024 Leyendas Essay Contest at the Capitol

This year, we revamped our traditional essay competition to honor the diverse voices of Latinx icons. The Leyendas Essay Contest remains dedicated to highlighting Georgia’s farmworkers, honoring Cesar Chavez, and shedding light on other influential Latinx figures in our state.

The winners of the Leyendas Essay Contest were honored on April 12th, 2024, at the Georgia State Capitol.

Our contest serves to raise awareness and honor the profound influence of these figures. This initiative fosters empathy, unity, and mutual respect among communities.

Isabel Otero, the Georgia Policy Director for the Southern Poverty Law Center, was the esteemed keynote speaker. She left us with the following message:

“How will you become your own family’s…community’s leyenda? How will you contribute? Will it be as an organizer like Dolores Huerta or Cesar Chavez? Will it be in the labor movement?”

Thank you to everyone who participated this year. We had many entries for the adult and high school categories but only one 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner. For those who did not place, we highly encourage you to try again next year.
